NotchPrompter

macOS

A teleprompter in the notch

Every take, I was reading off my screen and looking like I was staring at my keyboard.

Your script floats over the menu bar, directly under the camera, so you read and hold eye contact at the same time. It follows your voice, and it stays out of the recording.

Opening it the first time

This build is signed by me but not notarised by Apple, so macOS will refuse to open it on a double-click. That is Gatekeeper doing its job with an app it has never seen — but you only have my word for that, so the source is there if you would rather read it or build it yourself.

  1. 1. Open the .dmg and drag NotchPrompter to Applications. Worth doing rather than running it from Downloads — macOS moves a quarantined app to a random read-only path, which breaks things in ways that look like bugs.
  2. 2. Right-click it → Open, then confirm at the prompt.

Or from a terminal, once:

xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/NotchPrompter.app

What it does

Invisible to your recording

One toggle keeps the panel out of screen recordings and shared screens. You see the script; everyone watching sees a clean shot.

It follows your voice

On-device speech recognition tracks where you are in the script and scrolls to match. Pause, ad-lib or skip a paragraph and it catches up instead of leaving you behind.

Stage directions stay yours

Lines in brackets — [Pause], [Intro Music] — render dimmed and are skipped when matching your speech, so a cue never stalls the scroll.

Put it anywhere

Left, centre, right, or dragged wherever you want, on any display. Size, spacing, colours and corner radius all adjust while you watch.

Controls that reach you mid-take

Global shortcuts for play, pause, restart, speed and nudge keep working while you are recording in another app. No Accessibility permission needed.

Reads the way you want

Five type styles including a dyslexia-friendly setting, adjustable speed and countdown, loop, and mirror mode for teleprompter glass.
